What Changed for the 2020 Subaru Outback?

While the appearance is similar to previous generations, the new 2020 Outback features a new exterior design with changes like scalloped rocker panels. The new Outback features a huge, new infotainment display on every trim level except the base model. The new base engine features 90 percent new parts and is shared with the Forester. The turbocharged engine found in the Ascent is now available for the Outback.

2020 Subaru Outback Features

  • The 2020 Outback now rides on the Subaru Global Platform, which is much stiffer and can absorb up to 40 percent more energy than last year's model. The suspension has been updated as well with new hollow anti-roll bars in the front and rear to save weight and maintain a solid connection to the road.
  • The Outback not only comes with the EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology safety suite as it did last year, but it also comes with standard high-beam assist for switching between high and low beams to increase safety and visibility for everyone on the road.
  • DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System is available for the new Outback and uses highly sophisticated features to detect when the driver is distracted or sleepy. This system uses facial recognition technology to detect signs of fatigue and distraction. It also issues warnings when the driver looks away from the road for more than three seconds and will bring the Outback to a halt if warnings are ignored. In the event that the driver is completely unresponsive, the STARLINK™ system will seek the assistance of a live operator.

  • The new Outback features a stunning 11.6-inch vertical touchscreen for all trim levels, excluding the base model. This touchscreen uses two separate processors to ensure quick responses and seamless interface when you're driving in the Crestwood area. One processor controls media functions while the other handles climate control.
  • Have you ever wished that there was an easier way to access your vehicle's cargo space? The new Outback features a hands-free power rear gate that allows you to open the cargo gate without using your hands. Not does this rear gate open the back for you, but the height memory function ensures that the gate is always within reach.
  • Both the automatic climate control and the available dual-zone climate control digital systems feature voice-activated commands so that can access the features of either system without taking your hands off the wheel.

  • The 2020 Outback now comes with a standard 2.5-liter DOHC engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, allowing you to merge and pass on the highways around Shelbyville with ease. If you're interested in maximizing your power and agility on the road, then consider the newly available 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.
  • When the Outback is equipped with the available 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, its towing capacity increases from 2,700 pounds to 3,500 pounds. This difference may allow you to tow a larger boat or camper on your next adventure.
  • The new Outback comes with a robust selection of traction stability features that include Vehicle Dynamics Control, Active Torque Vectoring, X-MODE®, Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and more.
