Learn About The Subaru Solterra

January 19th, 2023 by

Subaru proudly introduces the new 2023 Solterra, the brand’s first all-electric SUV. Now you get the legendary capability of Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with the incredible power of electricity. In addition, this tech-forward vehicle boasts modern style, premium comfort, and the latest driver-assist systems you crave. There’s a reason Kelley Blue Book has named Subaru its Most Trusted Brand eight years in a row.

If you’re shopping for an SUV with an elevated interior that will reliably perform on and off the road while lowering your carbon footprint, the Solterra should be at the top of your list. We asked our electric vehicle (EV) experts to review the finer features of the Solterra to help you better understand this exceptional vehicle.

You can opt for one of three trim levels on the Solterra. The base trim, Premium, has a starting MSRP of $44,995 and comes with Subaru’s new StarDrive electric drivetrain producing zero emissions. Plus, you get Subaru’s driver-assist suite EyeSight and Symmetrical AWD. The Solterra sits 8.3 inches off the ground and rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels. Solterra’s multi-beam LED headlights give the front fascia an aggressive stare, and the soft, sleek side body gives it an athletic posture.

Keyless entry and push-button start technologies get you in and running. Once inside the Premium trim’s cabin, you can find refined touches such as the leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated cloth seats. The second-row seat reclines for comport or folds flat to expand your cargo area to over 63 cubic feet. Your in-vehicle tech operates on an 8.0-inch touchscreen with all the StarLink features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth for hands-free synchronization with your phones.

USB-A and USB-C ports in the front and rear keep you connected and powered up, and you have in-vehicle Wi-Fi that connects several devices simultaneously. In addition, a voice-activated vehicle interface lets you talk to your Solterra to operate systems such as audio, climate control, and navigation.

Subaru Solterra Limited

The next trim in the lineup, Limited, adds to the features found on the Premium trim. At a starting MSRP of $48,495, you get notable exterior upgrades like roof rails, LED fog lamps, and 20-inch alloy wheels. You also get power-folding side-view mirrors that feature turn-signal indicators and heating and offer entry illumination. You also get unique rear spoiler mounts to the roof and splits for improved aerodynamics. The power-operated liftgate has adjustable height memory, automatically closes, and features a vehicle lock button.

The Limited’s cabin offers more premium upgrades, including a 10-way power-adjusting driver’s seat, and the rear outboard seats also heat. In addition, Subaru uses its beautiful and durable StarTex upholstery for a luxurious look and feel.

Subaru’s Digital Key elevates your tech package, as does the 12.3-inch touch screen that powers your infotainment and the wireless charging station. A premium audio system from Harman Kardon comes with 11 speakers, turning every drive into a theater-quality experience. You also get Subaru’s panoramic 360-degree camera system that uses multiple cameras to render an image from above. When used with the Advanced Park Driver Parking Assistance system, you can park anywhere and from outside the vehicle, letting the system get you in and out of tight spots without worry.

Subaru Solterra Touring

Subaru’s top-of-the-range Touring model, priced at $51,995, comes with the high-end luxury you expect. You’ll love the panoramic glass roof with a power sunshade that opens up to let all the light and air in during your next adventure. The Touring also features ventilated front seats and a digital rearview mirror that streams a live, wide-angle feed from behind your Solterra. In addition, a standard retractable cargo cover helps you keep the sun and prying eyes off what’s inside.

Subaru Solterra’s StarDrive

Subaru’s first all-electric powertrain, StarDrive, uses dual independent electric motors in both axles to propel your Solterra. These motors get power from the 72.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. As a result, StarDrive produces 215 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque. These dual electric motors enhance your AWD capability, and the regenerative braking system and S-Pedal drive help return power to the battery as you brake. S-Pedal offers one-pedal driving that also helps reduce driver fatigue.

Subaru’s legendary Symmetrical AWD system only gets better in the Solterra. You get exceptional control in harsh weather and challenging surface conditions. And now Subaru added an X-Mode, which works with the VSC to optimize traction by reducing wheel spin over slippery roads. You also get the Traction Control, Downhill Assist Control, Grip Control, and Active Cornering Assist systems that intelligently monitor your Solterra’s traction and adjust the steering, throttle, braking, and suspension systems for maximum control.

Subaru’s Traction Control system focuses on wheel slippage and applies the brakes to help improve control. The Grip Control system monitors the road’s surface and adjusts power output accordingly for consistent performance. Solterra’s Active Cornering Assist system adjusts brake pressure on the inside wheels during cornering for better grip, and the Downhill Assist Control provides steady speed on steep declines.

Solterra’s zero-emissions powertrain gets an impressive 94 MPGe rating around town and a 114 MPGe highway rating from the EPA. In addition, you can travel up to 228 miles on a full charge. When you need to stop and recharge, you can charge up to 80% from the low charge warning in as little as one hour using Subaru’s DCFC quick-charging capability, available at over 86,000 EVgo charging stations nationwide. As a bonus that lowers your carbon footprint further, when you charge with EVgo, you’re using the country’s first charging station network that relies solely on 100% renewable energy.
