The 2026 Subaru Outback Is All-New — And It’s a Real SUV Now

For 30 years, the Subaru Outback has been the go-to vehicle for drivers who want versatility, capability, and a little adventure in their daily life. For 2026, Subaru hasn’t just refreshed the Outback — they’ve completely redesigned it. The seventh-generation Outback steps boldly into true midsize SUV territory while staying true to everything that made it an icon.

2026 Subaru Outback

A Bolder, Tougher Look

The most obvious change is the styling. Gone is the lifted wagon profile of generations past. The 2026 Outback is taller, boxier, and more upright, with vertically stacked headlights, a stronger grille, and a flatter roofline that maximizes both presence and cargo space. The lower fascia is textured for better scratch resistance, and 19-inch wheels are available for the first time on certain trims.

Despite the new look, the Outback retains 8.7 inches of ground clearance — more than many full-size body-on-frame SUVs — so it’s still ready for whatever the weekend throws at it.

A Modern, Practical Interior

Inside, the Outback gets the comprehensive tech upgrade owners have been asking for. A new 12.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto runs the Subaru Multimedia System, paired with a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster. And here’s something owners will appreciate: Subaru listened to feedback and brought back physical climate control buttons.

Thoughtful touches are everywhere — larger 32-oz bottle holders, redesigned cupholders, a clip for the front passenger’s phone, and a washable, configurable tonneau cover made from recycled materials.

Two Capable Boxer Engines

Subaru’s signature SUBARU BOXER engines return with refinements:

  • 2.5L naturally aspirated — 180 horsepower for everyday efficiency
  • 2.4L turbocharged — 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque for serious capability

All trims come standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, now with faster center differential lockup and steering-angle integration for sharper handling. The steering itself borrows tech from the WRX for a more direct, natural feel.

Smarter, Safer Driving

Every 2026 Outback comes with the latest version of EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, with upgraded cameras and radar. Touring and Touring XT trims add Highway Hands-Free Assist — letting you take your hands off the wheel under certain highway driving conditions while still keeping your eyes on the road.

Six Trims to Choose From

The 2026 Outback is offered in Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and the rugged Outback Wilderness — starting at $34,995 MSRP for the Premium trim.
